Our Mezcals

Mala Mía™ means "my bad," and it is our way of paying our respects to the rare and mighty Magueys for allowing us to use their power for our Mala Mía™ Artesanal Mezcals. Our first collection presents a selection of 6 rare Magueys distilled by 3RD Generation Maestro Mezcalero, Saturnino Martínez Méndez, at PALENQUE TEPEXTATE in the village of Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Protected Denomination of Origin for Mezcal protects the distillation of 37 Agave species (referred to as "Magueys") from 9 different Mexican regions. Mezcal is made in distilleries called “Palenques" led by "Maestro Mezcaleros."

The combination of each region and Palenque's traditional production methods and each Maguey's unique characteristics and maturation process informs the magical flavors highlighted in our Mezcals.

We want to be known globally as the brand that expanded and elevated the mainstream perception of mezcal- shifting the mezcal narrative from “smoky tequila” to an intriguing and delicious premium spirit category that encompasses a wide spectrum of agave types, flavor profiles, and price points.

our vision

We want to disrupt, evolve, and become a leading voice in the mezcal category through our diverse portfolio of premium maguey mezcals and our focus on exciting storytelling aimed at educating and inspiring existing and soon-to-be mezcal enthusiasts.

Espadín

(Agave Angustifolia)

Named after its sword-shaped leaves, ESPADÍN is the most well-known and widely available of the Magueys, making up 95% of Mezcal imported into the U.S. Unlike other ESPADÍN mezcals that are roasted for 7 days, ours is roasted for just 4 days, giving our ESPADÍN a smooth, well-balanced flavor that’s slightly sweeter and less smoky. It is a superior choice for both sipping and mixing, and the perfect partner for virtually any type of cocktail.

TOBALÁ

(Agave Potatorum)

Considered ‘magical’ and rumored to have medicinal properties by Mezcaleros, the small and mighty TOBALÁ is a small, wild agave that thrives high up in the Sierra mountains, making it exceptionally rare and treasured. Our TOBALÁ is sure to enchant both seasoned and budding mezcal lovers with its natural sweetness and floral flavors. Perfect for sipping neat, on the rocks, or as a base for whiskey-style cocktails such as an Old Fashioned or Manhattan.

Ensamble

(CUISHE/ESPADÍN/TEPEZTATE)

Our ENSAMBLE is not a ‘mezcal blend’, but a carefully curated medley of two or more agave varietals that are roasted, fermented, and distilled together in a single batch. The result is a multilayered flavor journey with different tasting notes, not unlike a fine perfume. Our ENSAMBLE starts with the mineral and herbal flavors of CUISHE and finishes on the more flavorful notes of TEPEZTATE, with ESPADÍN forming a solid, fruity base. Delicious if sipped and savored on its own, at the heart of a sweet Margarita, or our signature cocktail: The Smoked Peach.

Cuishe

(Agave Karwinskii)

The CUISHE is quickly developing a cult following amongst mezcal lovers. The CUISHE’s long, tree-like shape with the piña growing upright on a dense, fibrous stalk means that yields from this species are very small. However, our CUISHE makes up in quality for what it lacks in quantity. With its dry, tannic, and herbaceous flavor profile, our CUISHE is the perfect choice for gin-lovers, and those eager to experience a truly fresh perspective on mezcal. Try it in a French 75 or our signature cocktail, the Brillo Solar.

TEPEZTATE

(Agave Marmorata)

The TEPEZTATE weighs up to 890 lbs and is infamous among Palenqueros as a species that is as difficult to harvest as it is to transport. This, combined with the fact that the TEPEZTATE takes up to 28 years to mature, makes our TEPEZTATE one of the rarest and most exclusive mezcals in our portfolio. We recommend enjoying the TEPEZTATE’S intensely herbal and spicy flavors in a neat, 2 oz. pour or complement them with citrus in a Paloma or our signature cocktail, The Passionate Mezcalero.

COYOTE

(Agave Iyobaa)

Remarkably rare and revered for both its beauty and exquisite flavor, the COYOTE is a species of agave only found in the wild and takes around 12 years to reach full maturity. As the most exclusive member of the Mala Mía™ family, our limited run COYOTE mezcal will surprise and excite even the most seasoned mezcal enthusiasts with its citrus-sweet, earthy notes. It is best enjoyed neat and slow, to allow its full flavor to unfold.
